In partnership with the City of Austin, The Independent is proud to bring a lasting community benefit to this endeavor. From the active revitalization of the Shoal Creek Greenbelt surrounding the base of the building, to a significant donation to arts and community beautification, to the integration of a Plaza and locally-mindful retail component at the base of the building, The Independent will work to enhance the community as a whole.

Margaret Shaw, City of Austin development lead for the former Energy Control Center site, said The Independent “sets a high bar, not only in height, but in sustainability as well.”

“The project offers much for the Austin community to enjoy, including new spaces for local restaurants and retailers, marked improvements to the Shoal Creek bicycle and pedestrian trail, and a dynamic plaza on Third Street for the public to enjoy,” Shaw said.

The project is expected to make a significant contribution to affordable housing, and an impactful sum to arts in Austin.

The Independent will also promote electric car use through car charging stations, and reliance on alternative means of transportation, such as B-cycle, safe pedestrian passage, car sharing, and mass transit options. The location and proximity of The Independent to the best of downtown Austin
